Quick Bites, Aix en Provence restaurant:

La Cantine, Aix en Provence restaurant,

Address: 13 Rue des Bouteilles, 13100 Aix-en-Provence

Phone:04 42 67 29 66

Where?

Behind the Palais du Justice, in a small square

What’s on offer?

Corsican specialities, salads, tartines, meat, fish and pasta.

Why go?

Much better than the average cafe. Wide choice, but all dishes are prepared with care, using quality ingredients.

Wine?

Excellent choice. The wine list is extensive and has been carefully compiled by the owners to offer the best of Provence and Corsica. If you particularly like a wine then you can purchase a bottle to take away from the shop inside the cafe.

Who goes?

Aix workers looking for a quick quality lunch, and tourists in the know, or who stumble upon the place.

We ate:

Saltimboca (22 euros) and Lasagne (16 euros).

Saltimboca was a take on the Italian classic, with rolled strips of veal served in an earthern ware dish, with a cheese and tomato stuffing. The Lasagne was large and made with good quality meat and cheese.

The verdict:

Good pit-stop for honest decent food in Aix
