Provence Boutique Hotels

Pavillon de Gallon, Cucuron, Luberon, Luberon south

Provence Guru selects the best small hotels and bed and breakfasts (chambre d’hote) in Provence. Members of the Provence Guru editorial team have usually stayed in the hotels included in the selection or in rare cases we receive so many recommendations that a hotel is included in the list.

The Pavillon de Gallon is nominally a bed and breakfast, but in reality this small two room bed and breakfast offers so much more. There’s a brand new infinity pool, award winning gardens, cookery classes and pilates lessons.  The nearby village of Cucuron is delightful, and within walking distance. Try in particular the Michelin starred cuisine of Eric Sapet at La Petite Maison, a delightfully atmospheric restaurant right next to the Etang.  The market on Tuesday morning is one of the most picturesque in Provence, set as it is under centuries old plane trees, next to the gently lapping waters of the Etang.

Nearby vineyards to visit include Bastide du Claux (appointment needed in advance) which makes some of the best reds in the Luberon, and slightly further afield Chateau Lacoste, which as well as wine to taste has stunning modern art installations.

To the north waiting to be explored are the picture postcard villages of the Luberon such as Gordes, Goult and Roussillon to the south, Aix en Provence and the Coast. Cucuron’s nearest neighbour is Lourmarin which offers the best shopping in the Luberon, with art galleries and clothes shops thronging the picturesque cobbled high street.

Prices around €220 depending on the season. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the whole experience more than justifies the price.
