The giant of Lamanon

The giant of Lamanon

Mid February to Mid March is the perfect time to plant a plane tree. To lovers of shade these trees provided the perfect combination of dappled sunlight and shelter from the burning sun. The largest plane tree in Provence is thought to be the giant of Lamanon, pictured left (click to enlarge), which is over 300 years old, 35 metres high and a whopping 8 metres in circumference. Perhaps the most stunning example of the cathedral of shade that plane trees can provide when planted in lines is at the etang in Cucuron in the southern Luberon (pictured above).

If you are interested in planting your own future giant of Lamanon, garden centres price their trees according to their circumference (measured 1 metre above ground level). A selection of trees currently available from Joli Jardin garden centre outside Lourmarin, is shown together with pricing details in the gallery below.

Alternatively if you have 300 years to spare, a simple seed and some tender loving care will do!
